Estimate sunrise and sunset for your trip

Estimate apparent sunrise, solar noon, sunset and daylight duration from a destination date, coordinates and traveler-entered UTC offset. Runs in your browser.

Estimate the apparent sunrise, solar noon and sunset for a destination date. Enter decimal coordinates and the UTC offset you want the result displayed in. Inputs and calculations stay in this browser.

Coordinates use positive latitude north and positive longitude east. Find a coordinate in a map you trust; this tool does not look up cities or convert time zones.

Enter a date, UTC offset and destination coordinates.

Worked example

For central Tokyo on 21 June 2026, enter latitude 35.6762, longitude 139.6503 and UTC offset +9. This implementation estimates apparent sunrise at about 04:25, solar noon at 11:43, sunset at 19:00, and a daylight span of about 14 h 35 min. These are calculated examples from the displayed inputs, not observed measurements; the tool does not identify Tokyo or confirm the local clock rule for the selected date.

Use the trip date calculator to count your trip days, the time-zone converter to compare itinerary clocks, and the trip itinerary organizer to record your own activity plans. Sunrise and sunset estimates do not account for buildings, mountains, weather or a local horizon.

Calculation method and limits

The calculator uses NOAA's published solar equations for the equation of time and solar declination, then applies the sunrise/sunset hour-angle equation with an apparent-horizon correction of 0.833°. This is an estimate for a geometric horizon. NOAA notes that atmospheric conditions can make observed sunrise and sunset differ, and its calculation details give lower accuracy outside 72° north or south. Near the poles, a sunrise or sunset may not occur on the selected date.

The UTC offset is supplied by you as a fixed number of hours. It does not derive daylight-saving time or historical time-zone rules. Fractional offsets are supported in 15-minute increments. Choose a valid date and confirm planning-critical times with a current local almanac or trusted destination source.

How it works

Enter the destination's calendar date, decimal latitude and longitude, and the UTC offset to display. The tool estimates apparent sunrise, solar noon, sunset and daylight span without looking up a location or time-zone rule.

Good to know

Does this tool find a city or its time zone?

No. Enter decimal coordinates and the UTC offset for the selected date yourself. The tool does not look up a city, map, time-zone identifier or daylight-saving rule.

How accurate are the sunrise and sunset estimates?

They use an approximate solar equation and apparent-horizon correction. NOAA notes that atmospheric conditions can shift observed times, and its calculation details give lower accuracy beyond 72 degrees north or south. Terrain, buildings and local horizon conditions are not modeled.

Can every location have a sunrise and sunset each day?

No. At high latitudes, a date can have no apparent sunrise or no apparent sunset. The calculator reports that condition when its solar-angle calculation indicates it.
