Settle up clearly
Split shared trip expenses between travel companions
Record who paid each shared trip expense and who benefited. See net balances and a minimum-transfer settlement suggestion; entries stay in your browser.
Add each shared expense once, using the same currency throughout. Choose who paid and who shares that specific cost. Names and amounts stay in this browser; nothing is uploaded or saved by this page.
Travelers
Shared expenses
Add at least two travelers and one shared expense to calculate.
Use one currency and enter amounts with up to two decimal places. The currency code is a label; the tool does not check currency-specific precision or convert amounts. Any leftover hundredths from an uneven split go to selected participants in the order shown. A payer may be outside the participant list if they paid on someone else's behalf. Exact minimum-transfer calculation is limited to 12 travelers with nonzero balances. This page does not store or send your entries; download a CSV if you want to keep a copy.
For a daily per-person estimate before the trip, use the trip budget planner. If expenses were recorded in different currencies, convert confirmed amounts in the currency worksheet first; this splitter does not apply exchange rates.
Method and further reading
The tool first nets each person's recorded payments against their allocated shares, then searches zero-sum groups to minimize how many transfers settle those balances. Because finding the minimum transfer count is a combinatorial problem, the exact search is capped at 12 travelers with nonzero balances.
How it works
Add each traveler, record an expense in one shared currency, select who paid and who should share it, then calculate balances and suggested transfers.
Good to know
How does the splitter divide an expense?
It divides each expense in integer minor units among the selected participants. If the amount does not divide evenly, remaining cents go one by one to participants in the order listed for that expense. The payer is credited for the full amount paid, whether or not they share that expense.
Are the suggested transfers the only way to settle?
No. They are one minimum-count set of transfers that balances the recorded amounts. You can settle differently by agreement. The result excludes expenses you did not enter and does not account for bank fees, exchange rates, taxes or payment timing.
