Driving abroad

Find official international driving permit sources

Route U.S.-licensed travelers to current destination driving guidance and the two U.S.-authorized international driving permit issuers. Does not decide whether an IDP is required.

This source finder is scoped to travelers with a U.S.-issued driver’s license. It routes you to official U.S. destination guidance and, for U.S. licenses only, the two U.S.-authorized IDP issuers. It does not decide whether you need an IDP or may drive.

Choose the license-issuing authority and enter your destination.

Your entries stay in this browser and are not submitted. The U.S. State Department country pages are for U.S. travelers; if your license was issued elsewhere, check that destination government’s transport authority and your own licensing authority instead.

Check the exact destination and license scope

  1. Use the destination’s current government transportation or licensing guidance to check whether your license is accepted, whether an IDP or translation is required, and any limits by visit length or vehicle type.
  2. Confirm the IDP issuing authority for the country that issued your driver’s license. Do not use a U.S. issuer link for a license issued outside the United States.
  3. If your license was issued in the United States, USAGov identifies AAA and AATA as the two organizations authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue U.S. IDPs. Carry your regular license as well, and verify current instructions with the issuer, destination authority and rental company.

An IDP is a translation document and does not replace the underlying driver’s license. Requirements differ by destination and can change; this page only organizes official starting points.

Official sources

This finder does not collect license numbers or personal documents, look up rules automatically, or establish that an IDP is required or sufficient for a trip.

Also check your passport validity against the destination rule you enter and plan time for your airport connection.

How it works

Choose the country or authority that issued your driver’s license and enter the destination. U.S. State Department and issuer links are limited to U.S.-issued licenses; confirm current rules with the destination and license authorities.

Good to know

Does the finder tell me whether I need an international driving permit?

No. It links to official destination and issuer starting points. Requirements depend on the destination and the license that was issued; confirm the current rule with the destination government.

Who can use the AAA and AATA links?

The U.S. Department of State identifies AAA and AATA as the two organizations authorized to issue IDPs in the United States. Those issuer links apply only when the driver’s license was issued in the United States.

Does an IDP replace my driver’s license?

No. USAGov says to carry both the IDP and driver’s license. Check the destination’s current rules and the issuer’s instructions.
