Before you travel
Find the official U.S. visa guidance for your trip purpose
Use your passport-issuing country and U.S. travel purpose to reach official State Department visa guidance. This source finder does not determine legal eligibility.
Use this finder to reach official U.S. visa information for your intended trip. It does not tell you whether you need a visa, qualify for a category, or may enter the United States.
Enter the passport-issuing country or authority and choose a purpose to get started.
Your entries are used in this browser page to prepare links and are not submitted to this site. Enter the same passport and trip details in the official government tools. A passport, residence, travel-history, transit, and other facts may affect the applicable rules.
How to check the official result
- Open the U.S. Department of State's Visa Wizard and enter the country or authority that issued the passport you will use, along with your actual primary travel purpose.
- Read the official visa category and requirements for your situation. For a temporary visit, review both visitor visa and Visa Waiver Program information where relevant. ESTA is a travel authorization for eligible Visa Waiver Program travel; it is not a visa.
- Check the U.S. embassy or consulate serving your application location for its current procedures, appointment availability, and document instructions.
- Recheck official instructions before applying and before travel. Do not rely on this page or an automated category suggestion as a legal eligibility decision.
This finder covers official U.S. federal starting points only. It does not cover visas for other destinations, state or territory immigration processes, or every special travel circumstance.

How it works
Enter the country or authority that issued your passport and choose your main purpose for travel to the United States. Use the official State Department Visa Wizard and confirm requirements with the relevant U.S. embassy or consulate.
Good to know
Does this finder tell me whether I qualify for a U.S. visa or visa-free travel?
No. It only points to official U.S. government information. The State Department Visa Wizard says its results do not guarantee visa eligibility, may omit visa types, and do not replace a consular officer's decision under U.S. immigration law.
Why do passport country and trip purpose matter?
The State Department says the appropriate visa category depends on the purpose of travel and other facts, and its Visa Wizard asks which country or authority issued the traveler's passport. Use the exact passport and purpose in that official tool, then check current local embassy or consulate services.
