Bill total planner
Calculate a tip and split a bill with a service charge
Enter the pre-tax bill, your chosen tip percentage, an included service-charge amount and party size. See the combined total and an even per-person split without preset tipping customs.
Answer: enter the bill before tax, a tip percentage you choose, any service charge already listed on the bill, and the party size. The calculator adds those amounts and divides the total evenly. It does not recommend a tip or decide whether a service charge should count as one.
The tip is rounded to the nearest hundredth before adding the service charge and splitting. If the total does not divide evenly into hundredths, the first people in the split receive one extra hundredth until the remainder is allocated. Tax, other fees and currency-specific decimal rules are not included.
Check the receipt before adding another amount
A line called “service charge” does not by itself tell you whether the amount is optional, who receives it, or whether it should be treated as a tip. Read the receipt and ask the business what the charge covers and how it is handled. Rules and practices differ by location; the sources below give Ireland-specific consumer guidance and a U.S. federal tax distinction, not a universal tipping rule.
- Confirm whether the printed amount is included in the total or still due.
- Ask whether it is mandatory or optional and who receives or shares it.
- Enter the service-charge amount once. Enter an additional tip only if that is the amount you choose.
Sources and limits
- Ireland's Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, tips and service charges: guidance says consumers should be able to choose whether/how much to tip and that mandatory service charges should be clearly communicated in advance (Ireland-specific; checked 3 Nov 2026).
- U.S. Internal Revenue Service, Instructions for Form 8027 (2026): service charges and tips are treated differently for U.S. federal tax reporting; this is not a customer tipping recommendation (checked 3 Nov 2026).
The calculator only performs arithmetic on your entries. It does not determine whether a charge is lawful, mandatory, optional, distributed to workers, taxable or a tip. Confirm the receipt, business policy and local consumer rules. Inputs stay in this browser.
For a broader trip-spending estimate, use the trip budget planner. If companions paid different expenses, settle the recorded amounts with the trip expense splitter. For confirmed amounts in different currencies, use the currency worksheet with your own exchange rates.
How it works
Enter the pre-tax bill, the tip percentage you choose, any service charge already included on the bill, the number of people and a currency code. The calculator shows each component and divides the total evenly.
Good to know
Does the tool recommend a tip percentage or tell me whether to tip again?
No. There is no preset percentage or country custom. Enter the amount you choose. Check the receipt and ask the business whether a service charge is optional, what it covers and who receives it before deciding whether to add anything else.
How is the tip calculated?
The entered percentage is applied to the pre-tax bill amount. The service charge is the separate amount you enter from the bill. The tool adds both to the pre-tax amount, rounds the tip to the nearest hundredth, and divides the combined total in hundredths among the entered number of people.
Does the calculator determine local tax or service-charge rules?
No. Tax, mandatory-charge disclosure, tip treatment and service-charge distribution vary by location and business. The result is arithmetic only; check local consumer guidance and the business's receipt or policy.
