Estimate the VAT refund on eligible EU shopping

Estimate VAT included in an EU shopping receipt, then apply an operator refund share or fee you enter. No country eligibility or refund amount is assumed.

Answer: estimate the VAT portion of an EU shopping receipt and adjust it using a refund share or provider fee that you enter. The tool does not determine eligibility, country thresholds, or the amount customs or a refund operator will approve.

Enter the eligible receipt total, VAT rate and a refund adjustment.

Method: for a VAT-inclusive price, theoretical VAT = eligible total × VAT rate ÷ (100 + VAT rate). The refund-share mode multiplies that amount by your entered share; the fee mode subtracts your entered fee and floors the estimate at zero. Intermediate values are unrounded; displayed values use two decimal places. This is an estimate, not an entitlement or quote.

Check the country's refund process

EU traveler VAT refunds concern eligible goods taken out of the EU in personal luggage. The European Commission describes conditions including proof of residence outside the EU, taking goods out within three months, a minimum purchase value set by each Member State, and possible retailer or intermediary fees. Your Europe says procedures differ by country and claims must be validated by customs before leaving the EU.

  1. Check the current official rules for your residence, purchase country, goods and itinerary; services and ineligible goods may not qualify.
  2. Ask the retailer which receipt amount and VAT rate are eligible, and whether the refund is calculated by the retailer or an operator.
  3. Check the operator's written payout estimate and every fee, then follow the country's customs validation steps before departure.

Include only the amount actually charged for eligible goods, not lodging, meals or an entire mixed receipt. If a retailer or operator gives an actual refund amount, use that amount as your practical comparison; this worksheet cannot reproduce country-specific rounding or operator tables.

Sources and limits

The calculator only applies arithmetic to your inputs. It does not verify the VAT rate, eligible amount, residency, goods, minimum purchase threshold, export deadline, customs validation or refund method. Rules vary by country and can change. Confirm with the national authority, retailer and refund operator. Inputs stay in this browser.

Put confirmed shopping costs in the trip budget planner and compare currencies with the currency worksheet, which also uses rates you enter.

How it works

Enter the purchase country, eligible VAT-inclusive goods total, applicable VAT rate and either the operator's estimated refund share or its fixed fee. The result is arithmetic from your inputs, not an eligibility decision or payout quote.

Good to know

Does the calculator tell me whether I qualify for a VAT refund?

No. Eligibility depends on residence, goods, country rules, minimum purchase values, timing and customs validation. Check current official instructions for your purchase and itinerary.

How do I get the VAT amount from a VAT-inclusive price?

For a VAT-inclusive eligible total, the VAT portion is total multiplied by the VAT rate divided by 100 plus the VAT rate. For example, a 100-unit total at a 20% rate contains 16.67 units of VAT before any refund deductions.

Will this match the refund operator's payout?

Not necessarily. Operators, retailers and countries can use different procedures, fees and rounding. Use a written operator estimate where available and confirm the final amount and customs steps.
