Estimate road-trip fuel cost

Estimate fuel volume, total fuel cost and cost per passenger for a road trip using your distance, vehicle economy, fuel price, currency code and chosen units.

Estimate the fuel volume and cost for a road trip from values you enter. No route, vehicle economy rating, fuel price or currency is looked up for you.

Enter a one-way distance. If the return route differs, add both route lengths yourself and leave the return option unchecked. Use a fuel price and economy value that match the selected unit system.

Enter your route, vehicle economy, fuel price and passenger count.

What the estimate includes

Estimated fuel use is distance divided by fuel economy for miles per gallon, or distance multiplied by liters per 100 kilometers and divided by 100 for metric inputs. Fuel cost is estimated fuel volume multiplied by your price per matching volume unit. Cost per traveler divides the total evenly by the traveler count. Results also show approximate distance and fuel-volume equivalents in the other unit system.

This is a planning estimate, not a quote. Actual fuel use can differ with route length, detours, traffic, terrain, weather, vehicle condition, load, speed and driving style. The result excludes tolls, parking, lodging, food and other trip costs. The currency code labels the result; this tool does not exchange currencies.

Sources and method

Fuel economy and fuel prices are your inputs, not live data or a guaranteed real-world result.

For other trip costs, use the daily trip budget planner, and review the currency worksheet if your fuel price and trip budget use different currencies. If the road trip is part of a flight itinerary, estimate its connection interval with the connection time planner.

How it works

Choose metric or U.S. customary units, enter the one-way route distance, vehicle fuel economy, fuel price, its three-letter currency code and passenger count, then select whether to include the return drive.

Good to know

How does the calculator estimate fuel cost?

It estimates fuel volume from the distance and fuel economy you enter, then multiplies that volume by your entered fuel price. Metric inputs use liters per 100 kilometers and price per liter; U.S. customary inputs use miles per U.S. gallon and price per U.S. gallon. The three-letter currency code labels the result; no exchange rate is applied.

Does the result include every road-trip cost?

No. It estimates fuel only from your inputs. It does not fetch a route, fuel price, currency rate or vehicle rating, and excludes tolls, parking, detours, traffic, terrain, weather, idling and changes in load or driving style.

How is the passenger estimate split?

The calculator divides the estimated fuel cost evenly among the passenger count you enter. It does not account for different payment arrangements or who is driving.
